Chrislyn Woolston

December 19, 2013

We live in a time where the internet and social media have become more than a way to connect. They are now also a way to compare, critique and compete; not just with others, but with ourselves.  Some women look at a craft on Pinterest and instead of just thinking, “Wow, that is really creative”, add it to their library of negative self-talk with words like, “Wow, I am a lame mom because a) I would never have thought of organizing my child’s hair bows like that, and b) I actually would never have the skills to do that.”

Some women get on Facebook and see that their neighbors are taking their kids to Disneyland.  Quickly that fun road-trip planned for the family seems to feel like a failure and she wonders if she should do anything with her family at all.
And even if you’re not affected by social media, you might find ways to fall into these traps in our communities and at church.
You’re not alone in any of this. We all seem to do it. Why? Why do we give time focusing on the gifts we don’t have instead of giving our time to the GIFTS we do?
And that’s when these teachings in 1 Timothy quickly developed into our guide for our theme:
“NEGLECT NOT the gift that is in thee;
MEDITATE upon these things;
GIVE thyself WHOLLY to them.”
1 Timothy 4:14-15

This year, we invite women everywhere to join us in discovering the gifts they have been given and make sacred time to “meditate” on them.  How are they uniquely yours?  What would God have you do with them? We want to help you feel a renewed commitment to, as Paul invited, “give yourself WHOLLY” to those gifts.
But, wait. The theme is “Inevitable Light”.
Yes, it is.
Because during our study of this scripture, we found this great quote: “For those of us who feel wanting when it comes to talents and gifts, it is encouraging to know that this invitation is not to dazzle others with who we are or what we know. Rather, our light is the Light of the World reflected in us as we simply strive to do as He did. (Elder Lawrence Corbridge, Valiant in the Testimony of Jesus Christ)

And then it was clear. Our gifts aren’t about US. They are about HIM. And His Light.
Elder Corbridge goes onto say, “Your light will shine as an inevitable consequence of faithfully choosing to follow the Lord whatever the cost.”
And so, this year, we invite you to join us in discovering your gifts—your gifts from HIM—so that you can shine light to the world.
What one gift are YOU ready to illuminate in 2014?

Chrislyn Woolston has enjoyed planning events since the time she was old enough to write and could give everyone an “agenda”. After serving a mission in Denver Colorado, she graduated from Brigham Young University with a B.S. in Communications. She has worked for TOFW since 2006 and became Director in 2011. Since then, she has continued to take the program throughout the US, Canada and most recently Australia & New Zealand. When not traveling with TOFW, Chrislyn loves to take a “time out” with her husband and 3-year-old daughter, Emma.  a
